There are no
extra requirements for a network workstation over and above what is required
for the applications it is running. The rate of remote disk access is almost
completely governed by the transmission rate of the network-e.g. 10 MBite/s for
Ethernet, 4 MBit/s for Token ring, 1 MBit/s for Twisted pair networks. The amount
that the network is being used and how heavily the server is loaded also affect
the speed of remote disk access. So each workstation should be equipped for the
application for which it is intended-CAD, DTP, program development, general
office use etc. – with the exception of the hard disk component in place of
which an ISA network adapter should be installed.
